The Dark Side of BLACKPINK’sFame – And the K-pop Industry
BLACKPINK is one of the most popular girl groups in the world. They have millions offans, perform on big stages, and work with famous fashion brands. But behind theirbeautiful image and fame, there is a darker side to their life and the K-popindustry—especially for women.
Before BLACKPINK became famous, the members trained under a company called YGEntertainment for many years. Their training was very hard. They had to practicesinging, dancing, and more for 10 to 14 hours every day. They also lived away fromtheir families and followed strict rules. They were not allowed to date or make personaldecisions freely. Even after becoming famous, their lives are still controlled by thecompany. Their schedules, outfits, and public image are carefully managed. They can’talways speak their mind or live like normal people.
Being a K-pop idol is also very stressful. BLACKPINK members have shared theirfeelings in interviews and a Netflix documentary. Rosé said she often felt lonely duringtours, and Jennie once cried before going on stage because of the pressure. OtherK-pop stars have gone through even more pain. Jonghyun from SHINee died by suicidein 2017 due to mental health problems. Sulli and Goo Hara also passed away in 2019after facing hate and online bullying. These tragedies show how heavy the pressure canbe.
Another serious problem in the K-pop industry is how some women are treated. Somefemale idols have faced sexual abuse, harassment, or been forced to wear clothes theydidn’t want to. In 2019, a big scandal called the “Burning Sun Scandal” revealed thatsome male idols were involved in using and abusing women, and secretly filming them.Many female idols stay silent because they are afraid to lose their jobs or be blamed.The industry is mostly run by men, and that power imbalance makes it hard for womento protect themselves.
On top of this, BLACKPINK members—and other idols—face online hate every day. Lisa,who is Thai, has received racist comments. Jennie has been called “lazy” by peopleonline even when she was tired or unwell. K-pop idols are also expected to look perfectall the time. They are pressured to be very thin, have pale skin, and follow extremebeauty standards. This affects not only idols but also fans who feel they must look thesame.
Even though BLACKPINK seems rich and successful, they do not keep all the moneythey earn. The entertainment company takes a big part—sometimes up to 60%. Also,before becoming stars, trainees have to pay back the cost of their training, housing,and food. Many idols don’t have full control over their money, their music, or even theirdaily lives.
In conclusion, BLACKPINK is strong, talented, and loved by millions. But theirlives—and the lives of many K-pop idols—are not as perfect as they seem. They live withpressure, strict rules, and sometimes fear. As fans, we should support them not just withlove, but with understanding. We should respect their rights, speak out against abuse, andhope for a better and safer industry for all idols—especially women.
